Yellow Branch exceeds expectations on newest single, "Been Here"
Consider our expectations blown out of the water, because this all new single from Yellow Branch titled “Been Here” is exactly what we needed. Do yourselves a huge favor and read along for an in-depth look at his newest track, along with a background on this emerging artist.
Currently representing the Boston music scene, Yellow Branch is the solo project of Kevin Ducey. At the helm, Kevin manages the writing, playing, recording, mixing, mastering, and basically every facet of the project. On technically his second released single “Been Here”, he’s meticulously crafted up a genre bending single that falls into lo-fi indie rock, bedroom pop, and glimmers of ambient and shoegaze as well.
We’ll kick things off here by overwhelmingly recommending and suggesting a listen to “Been Here” as soon as possible. Before you do so though, let us continue to hype up the project of Yellow Branch and the artist behind the project. After graduating from Bennington College in 2018 with a degree in Music, Kevin has been hard at work creating immensely personal tunes. With more singles on the way, and an EP too, we’ll be keeping a close eye on what’s to come.
On the background of “Been Here” though, the song dives into the feeling of “being stuck in destructive cycles, wanting change, and being frustrated with these slow, difficult processes. It is simultaneously a recognition of imbued toxic masculinity with a desire to confront and root it out.” Taking away the stellar production for just a moment and focusing directly on the lyricism, it takes a lot of confidence to get that message out there. We always commend an artist who’s able to speak truthfully like this.
Our feelings on the song from start to finish were just how much we initially loved it on the instrumentation side of things. In our personal listening time, this is exactly the type of sound we listen to which usually means we “judge” a little bit harder when reviewing. With that being said though, Yellow Branch has put together his own signature style on the overarching genre that not only diversifies him from everyone making something similar, but has basically carved out his own subgenre in the process. Whatever label you could slap on it, it’s something new to us and 100% innovative in an already crowded space.
While “Intro” was technically his debut even though it was less than a minute in run time, we’ll consider “Been Here” the first formal song from Yellow Branch. We recommend both to get the full feeling of the artist, but we also suggest you follow along for more. There’s big things coming and we sincerely can’t wait to experience them ourselves. Enjoy!
