Bringing a massive dose of soul into the situation, Trey Duncan’s “Everything Except Goodbye” is exactly what we hoped he’d follow up his debut single with. We adored “Ten Track Heart” and will always come back to it, but the complete feeling of love and passion that’s gone into this one was the perfect addition. If you’re just finding out now about the music of Trey Duncan, we highly recommend you start at the beginning and get into this one as soon as possible.
Right from the start and up until the final moments, Trey immediately immerses the listener into an incredibly tough time in his life. On the background of the song, it’s about grieving the loss of a father figure. The honesty and sincerity come through within the first 30 seconds even just based on the tone and delivery, but it’s not until you start to connect the dots in the story that you realize these are serious themes. Trey says, “It was inspired by my uncle who was tragically murdered a couple of years ago. I put myself in my cousin’s shoes and let myself imagine what they were feeling and how it would be if I had lost my father”.
We mentioned it previously in our review for “Ten Track Heart”, but so much of what makes this song special is its gradual rise and song composition. The story goes deeper then that quote above, but even for those that are unfamiliar with Trey on a personal level, it’s his rawness that draws you in wanting to learn more. This is obviously a lyric-driven song even though the instrumentation is divine and any out of place production effects could’ve ultimately shifted focus. With the help of Erin McCaffrey and Sarah Morey to put their touches on the words, all the collaborators here really put their heads together to create something memorable and special for all to enjoy.
