Laura Sumner captivates on her all new EP, "Red Clay Blue Sky"

Delivering her first major release since 2008’s Dreamology, Laura Sumner has detailed a whole new set of personal experiences on her EP, Red Clay Blue Sky. Please read on for a complete review of the record, in addition to a background on this artist.

Taking real life situations and turning them into heartfelt songs is exactly the experience you’re going to endure on Laura Sumner’s inspiring EP, Red Clay Blue Sky. Written from the perspective of a worker who was “unceremoniously let go from a factory job”, the artist is descriptive as ever on this newest piece of work that expertly balances raw emotion, imagery-filled lyricism, and an expansive atmosphere of sound. We’ve sincerely enjoyed our multiple listens of the record and can’t wait for everyone out there to give it a play.

Recorded at Sound on Studios in Montclair, New Jersey with Grammy-winning producer Marc Swersky, the production presented is just as impressive as everything else Laura has brought to the table. Considering that this leans heavily on lyrics and less so on instrumentation to pique the listener, her songwriting skills certainly rise to the occasion to keep your focus piqued from start to finish. Through 5 total tracks that span right around 20 minutes in length, it’s the perfect bite size record to understand where this figure has come from and how it’s all gotten resolved.

Now while it will become quite obvious that Laura’s powerful vocals are the real star of the show here, she also received help on the instrumentation end to really fulfill her vision and capture that tone we can only assume she was shooting for. Without a doubt, the middle of the record in “Telling Georgia Goodbye” where the outro hits and everyone comes together for a special moment, it truly feels like the climax of it all. Taking her artistic vision into consideration though, we respect the way that she managed to tell the story from start to finish, which is why we’d still urge everyone out there to give this an uninterrupted front to back listen. With “American Man” kicking it off, you immediately get catapulted into a captivating storyline that flows flawlessly.

With all that being said, we hope that it’s not another 14 years until we hear more from Laura Sumner. For now, please go ahead and check out those links below to listen, follow along, and to keep up with all major news from the artist.
