Ava Breeze breaks down "Who Are You" in an in-depth Q&A - Interview

Fresh off the release of her latest single, “Who Are You”, we got the opportunity to speak with Ava Breeze again for an updated Q&A that answered all of our burning questions surrounding the single. Make sure to check all of them out, but don’t miss the links at the bottom where you can listen, follow along, and of course stay up to date for everything else that Ava’s involved with.

WWAM: Ava, thanks so much for taking the time to answer our questions. How have things been since the last time we spoke?

Ava: I am so happy to continue writing and making music as well as act! Things have been going well for me

WWAM: To start, "Who Are You" absolutely rocks from start to finish. Would you mind breaking down the message of it all?

Ava:First; thank you so much!! “Who are you is a melodic journey through the deep question, “Who are you”. When you think on it, that is an unanswerable question? “Who am I? Is ever changing and undefinable, yet we think about this everyday. Do we change because of who we are around? Is our change growth? Who are we at our core? Who do we associate with? Who can we trust? This song takes you on a melodic thought provoking journey into these eternal questions.

WWAM: The production on the song is too good as well. Do you do all of your production or do you have help putting together the final pieces?

Ava: This has been the most challenging song I have worked on. I started the production process with Josh Marsh, and he is a true genius. Collaborating is always magic and his friend and fellow music producer magician Joey Pietra worked with me to finish it, and we came up with two versions. (for the sake of length and radio in mind.) Only the radio version is being released at this time.

WWAM: If you had to put a label on this song's genre, how would you label it?

Ava: It’s truly different as it incorporates instrumentation not typical in melodic trance music, yet has similar builds and vibe to that genre. It’s truly hard to check it’s genre box.

WWAM: Are you going to be looking to experiment on further tracks?

Ava: I am definitely trying on whatever style I feel in the moment because most artists ARE a style… I am a songwriter for example I am writing a rock song at the moment that is about a liar. I unconsciously fall into multiple genres because I don’t feel like conforming to one thing is necessary. The vibe of the song creates itself. I may end up in a style box one day. Right now I am just on this writing / recording journey and it seems to be twisting down different paths. With one similarity in each. Every song has a story and a harmonic journey that plays with sounds and harmonies.

WWAM: Are you trying to model your sound after your inspirations or trying to for your own sound?

Ava: I am really just writing and things finds its genre. I have been influenced by so many genres of music and gained inspiration from a centuries worth of music and beyond. It’s fun being compared to my fav. Artists for sure! I will say, I just wrote my first song in the heartbreak style of Taylor Swift!  probably shouldn’t have broken my heart. Now you’ve been “Swifted”, my first song about a specific persons actions and consequences.

WWAM: Were there some key artists or albums in your life that inspired you to take this path as a musician?

Ava: I have a truly eclectic list of artists that have inspired me. I love Enya, Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Dave Mathew’s, Eminem, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Aurora, Billie Eilish, Lana Del Rey, Florence and The Machine, Paramore, Evanescence etc……..

WWAM: What does your music say about you?

Ava: I am writing in my head and into my notes all the time…Lyrics are where I typically start, but recently a humming nite pattern without words will pop in my head and I have to record it so I don’t forget. I am hoping to grow as an artist with every single, I hope to gain listeners and people that enjoy the music. I’d like DJ’s to hear it and include it with their set for EDM, I want to hear my music on radio.

WWAM: Trying to tour this year?

Ava: I want to tour when the time is right and the booking makes sense, paired with other acts that make sense. I feel it coming in the air.

WWAM: What are you looking to accomplish with this single?

Ava: I truly believe this single is so different that it will catch people off guard a bit. I do hope it’s something that hits a chart and makes it to good playlists and more and more ears.

WWAM: There’s been so many incredible releases over throughout the year, what have you been listening to in your free time? Watching anything maybe?

Ava: I am really into season 4 of Stranger Things. It became personal for me this season, with the Kate Bush song used. That song is one of my moms favorites, and I’ve heard it my whole life. Now it’s “new” and my friends like it. It feels surreal.

WWAM: What message would you like to pass off to the listeners?

Ava: Right now, mental health is such a focus post pandemic and tragedy. Music may just be a great place for others to feel, express and find themselves. It’s how I heal, and find my resolve.

WWAM: How can they find your music and is there anything else they can look forward to?

Ava: I am on all streaming platforms, and social media for reels and TikToks. Music videos will release soon and there are always projects on deck. I hope people follow to hear the music share in that experience.
