Tim Kohler succeeds on long awaited single, "Typewriter"
Releasing his first single in over two years, Tim Kohler is back with an ultimately vivacious track, “Typewriter”. Do yourselves a favor and read along as we share our thoughts on his music, as well as a background on the artist as well.
Following up Kohler’s 2019 single “Tonight We Are Alive”, we’re absolutely thrilled because the artist has returned with a truly unique new track. Co-produced with Damon Moon at Standard Electric Recorders outside Atlanta, GA, "Typewriter" features cello from Book Club's Matt Jarrard as well as viola work from stellar contemporary Atlanta musician Martha Oceguera.
Being directly influenced by the classic songwriters of the 1960’s, in addition to today’s modern Top 40 pop, Tim has managed to mingle the best of both worlds in his complex compositions. Having been compared to the likes of Ben Folds and the Flaming Lips, we could not possibly agree more. In this case though, there’s a certain sense of uniquity that is setting what he’s creating apart from the rest.
Considering the artist’s life has been quite busy over the past year, with him finishing up college and being a father, the overall plan is to release a handful of new music over the course of 2021. While the music will be recorded by himself, he’ll also have some help from his live band, the Friendship Orchestra. At this point though, we’ve become fans so quickly, we’re giddy at the thought of more music like this being released in the coming months.
Speaking directly on “Typewriter”, it’s undoubtedly one of the most lovely yet jarring things we’ve heard in a while, but we mean that in the best possible way. Kicking off the song with a cello that’s right in your face, leading to the slow introduction of synthesizers galore, and then to top it off with the commanding vocals and delivery of TIm Kohler himself, it was difficult not to love this.
We’re always fans of music that breaks the mold, especially when it comes to music that features any amount of strings. The problem always seems to be that the introduction of any string instrument or synthesizer can sometimes feel out of place or unwelcomed. In this case though, everything was used in the best way possible and didn’t feel like it was taking over the song in the slightest. The highlight and focus overall laid on the vocals, which were definitively nailed. We would describe Tim’s vocals as a confident blend of emotional, dramatic, but purposeful in its delivery.
Seeing as though there’s a chance more will see the light of the day by the end of the year, we’re beyond excited to see what else Tim and the band can create. Having now gone through his past discography and not being surprised that it’s as great as it is, we’re supremely confident that whatever is created will be desirable.
With this all being said though, we’re highly suggesting you go ahead and give “Typewriter” a listen, you won’t regret it! For all things Tim Kohler, to listen, and to keep up with all future releases and information, please check out the following links below.
