Reverend Bones comes out with a winner on debut single, "Tycoon"
Seeing its official release on January 29th, 2021, Reverend Bones have shared their long awaited debut single, “Tycoon”. We are loving it! Please read along with us as we share our full thoughts on the track, in addition to a background on the band as well.
For those unaware, Reverend Bones is the solo work of Australian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and climate activist, Michael John Bones. Mashing up the best parts of indie rock, sprinkled in with glimmers of country blues, gospel, and grunge, Reverend Bones plans to explore a plethora of themes surrounding the likes of spirituality, capitalism, love, addiction, and so much more.
After deconstructing his faith in his early 20’s, Bones’ impending debut record Escape From Heaven featured his personal experiences of the death of God, and his attempt at making sense of the world anew. The plan at the moment is to release a new song for every month of the year, and so far, Australia’s favorite radio station Triple J have already given it significant play.
As for our opinion though, well, we’re absolutely enamored with fantastically original and impressive the song really is. Coming in at just over 4 minutes in total track time, the song manages to completely overwhelm the senses in terms of sound, lyricism, and emotion conveyed. Having listened multiple times at this point, it truly is one of the best new pieces of music that have come across our table in a while. We mean it.
With a production that wraps up the whole song perfectly, Bones’ ability to command the audience with his vocals was one of our favorite parts of the song. Right from the beginning, the instrumentation takes you down the rabbit hole of something that is meaningful. Knowing full well the background of the song and seeing where the context is coming from, it makes it that much more powerful of an overall track.
Considering that there’s more coming in just a month from now, it’s got us beyond excited for what’s next. While Escape From Heaven seems to be months away at this point, we’ll be sure to listen to all the singles that come our way. This really was an ultra nice hybrid of straightforward indie rock, however Reverend Bones have succeeded in implementing a unique and complementary approach to the feel of it all. Without a doubt, this one’s a winner.
