Fairhazel channels a cleverly vintage sound on 2nd record, "I Sold My Soul For Fairhazel"

Released officially in October of 2020, but still as impressive today, Fairhazel has shared his thought provoking sophomore record, I Sold My Soul For Fairhazel. Take a deep dive into our thoughts on the album by reading along.

For those unaware, Hugh Macdonald is a British & South African singer songwriter who goes by the name of Fairhazel. While he’s been compared to the likes of greats such as Ben Howard and Sufjan Stevens, the artist has certainly injected his own signature sound that is setting him apart from the rest.

Taking notes from his inspirations like Andy Shauf and Harry Nilsson, Fairhazel's easygoing and relaxed feel is just the type of music we needed in our lives at this point in time. Painting imagery filled and vibrant songs with his vintage sounding vocals is something we weren’t expecting, but have since openly welcomed since the release of the record.

Coming in at a total of 16 songs, spanning 51 lush minutes split across two separate sections, we have to alert the reader that not only is the artist in charge of the singing and songwriting, but also the arrangement, production, and engineering. Truly, he does it all. As if listening to it from start to finish wouldn’t make you an instant mega fan, the overall cohesiveness and the stories he tells would be more than enough to draw you in.

Considering that the record has been out since October of last year, it’s already garnered a handful of positive reviews and positive criticism all over the world. Since then though, there’s an opportunity for fans everywhere to get in on the impending vinyl release, which you can preorder now via Qrates. As lovers of all things physical media, jump on this quick before it sells out!

Back to the music though, it really can’t be overstated how much we’re enjoying I Sold My Soul For Fairhazel. We could say a million great things and attempt to convince you to listen, but in this case, we’ll just guide you in the direction of clicking play on the album opener “Maybe” and letting the music flow through you for the duration of its run time.

If you still happen to be on the fence though, try to get in the mindset of something quite Beatles-esque, with its own carefree atmosphere, mixed with relatable stories mixed in here and there. Really though, there’s nothing that isn’t relaxed and unenjoyable here. Enjoy!
