The Jones Project shares his spacey new single, "Mellow Drama"
Review by Austin Sher
With another intriguing single released in 2020, The Jones Project is back with a spacey new track titled “Mellow Drama”. We loved it! Please read along with us as we share our full thoughts, in addition to a background and insight on the artist himself.
The Jones Project is the solo project of Callum Martin who handles all the non-live aspects of the band. His musical influences range from Psychedelic Rock to Lounge Jazz, which are all present within his overall sound. His overall goals for the music are really to drive a sense of tranquility to the audience upon hearing, whilst leaving lyrics and narrative open to interpretation. Floating, ethereal guitar chords, wide, dream-like backing vocals, nostalgic synth melodies, thick, groove ridden baselines and tightly wound, punchy drums form coherent pieces of music that sit, perfectly partnered, with a San Francisco sunset.
Specifically on “Mellow Drama”, Callum let us know that the song is about the act of being too self-critical. This song is a long-winded nod to the phrase ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff. Our first impressions came almost immediately as the song swept us into another orbit. In terms of atmosphere and production at first though, they were absolutely stunning and quite Tame Impala-esque in relation to the sweeping synths and bass tones.
As fantastic as the addition of lyrics were to this song, and we commend the artist on his effort and vocals, the song was also so outstanding on its own that we’d love to hear a purely instrumental version of it. Like most of The Jones Projects’ existing discography, the production and sounds are just absolute top notch spectacles of sound. The vocals and lyricism add depth and overall a positive presence to the music, but even without them, we’d still be impressed.
Seeing as The Jones Project has released a handful of singles throughout this year, we’re truly hoping that there’s more of a formal EP or full length album scheduled for the new year. We loved “Mellow Drama” so much that we’d love to hear a cohesive record coming from this talented artist. No rush to Callum in the slightest, we’re just hoping big things are around the corner. With that being said though, we are highly recommending and encouraging the reader to check this one out!
