Sleepy Town shares his expansive debut album, "Standards"
Officially released in 2020, but still as fantastic today, Sleepy Town’s debut record Standards is out and it’s fantastic. Read along with us as we share our complete thoughts on the record, as well as a background on the project.
Jason Verrinder, the man behind the solo project of Sleepy Town, is a multi-instrumentalist, singer songwriter, recording engineer and producer from Merced, CA. After receiving his BA in Recording Artist from Loyola Marymount University, he’s been steady on his musical path. For a debut album, we’re beyond impressed with what we’ve heard here on Standards.
Initially written and recorded between May and August of 2020, Standards comes in at a whopping run time of one hour and five minutes, spanning 16 tracks. Our initial impressions on the record were really just how complete and cohesive it really was. As it seems that most records these days are leaning more towards shorter run times and limited tracks, Jason has gone the opposite route and put it all out there for those willing to listen. We commend him on the artistic choice as there’s a ton to break down here.
What could be categorized as strictly an indie rock record, goes off on bits of tangents of experimentation and also your more typical singer songwriter routes as well. Considering its length and brevity, the artist has really taken his free will of creativity and displayed it. Seeing as though he’s been involved in music for a while now, we can only assume that the creation and thought process of Standards far predates the actual writing and recording. With so much content being covered, it feels like a lifetime of achievements that have led up to this.
As for picking an actual favorite song, well that would be quite impossible. For the listener on the edge though, we will recommend some that stood out immediately. We always recommend starting with the album opener “The 1st Song”, but also tracks like “For Days”, “Hollow”, and the 7-minute epic, “Don’t Get Lost In The August Haze”. Starting there would give you a clear idea of what Sleepy Town is about and what he brings to the table. However, from start to finish the record is so outstanding, that you might as well just hit play and don’t get up until it’s done.
With all this being said though, Standards really took us for a loop. As lovers of all things rock and roll, especially of the indie variety, the music of Sleepy Town has impressed us quite a bit.
