S.L. Perion releases an extraordinary first record, "Better Than the 90's"
Out on January 29th, 2021, S.L. Perion has put forth his debut record, titled Better Than the 90’s. We are absolutely loving it! Read along with us as we share our complete thoughts on the record, in addition to a background on the artist as well.
Emerging hip hop artist producer, audio engineer, emcee, and songwriter S.L. Perion is currently based out of Brooklyn, NY in which he is crafting incredibly thought provoking and catchy music. Making waves within the scene, his style on Better Than the 90’s has quickly proven to be raw, explosive, and filled to the brim with original ideas and sounds. Right off the bat, we are highly recommending his debut record.
Striving to push the envelope with his sound and bridge various elements from different genres, we can confidently confirm that Better Than the 90’s is one of the most original pieces of hip hop we’ve heard in quite a bit. To kick things off, the album cover sets the tone of the record perfectly. In a call back to the 90’s itself, the first impression of any listening experience always goes to what the artist chooses to portray on the cover art. S.L. has primed the listener for what is sure to be a memorable experience.
Coming in at 11 total songs, spanning 50 minutes in runtime, the record isn’t short by any means, however it seemed to fly right by as each song progressed. Given the actual context of the record and the lyrics in which are being delivered, it becomes a legitimate story that you’re invested in from the beginning and want to see through until the end. We couldn’t help but get invested, that’s how convincing the artist was.
It’s always difficult to recommend a specific set of singles for the reader or future listener to get into, so what we’ll urge in this scenario is to start from the beginning and let the music flow through you until the end. Truly, there’s more than enough creative ideas and endeavours presented here that it doesn’t get boring, dull, or anything like that. The production stays high from start to finish and really does end with a massive bang towards the end.
Seeing as though this appears to be S.L.’s debut album, it’s got us beyond excited to see what other greatness he can engineer as his career goes on. It’s no doubt in our mind that this album will pick up steam as more listeners get their ears on it, it’s really just that good. With few features on the album, besides Rapper Hostile and Phyfe, S.L. did a great job of holding his own as well. It feels too often that artists of the mainstream rely on big features to keep a crowd interested, but that just wasn’t necessary here at all.
It should go without saying at this point, but we truly do feel that this needs to be the next record you listen to. Do yourselves a favor and click all the links below to follow along and listen! Enjoy.
