Scott Martin delivers an LA-themed anthemic single, "Bringing Hollywood Back to Life"

Review by Austin Sher

Released just before COVID interrupted the live music industry, Scott Martin’s latest single “Bringing Hollywood Back to Life” is the anthemic track that the world needs at this time. Read along with us as we break down our thoughts on the song, as well as a background on the artist as well.

For those who may be unaware, Scott Martin is a New York City based guitarist and songwriter, best known for his work with the alternative rock groups Bulletproof Messenger and Storm of the Century. Additionally, he’s also highly regarded as a first-call studio and live session player in the New York metropolitan area. As a self taught player and composer who is largely influenced by the classics, the underlying sounds and songwriting in his music stem from a deep appreciation of classic acts like R.E.M., U2, Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen.

As a solo artist, his artistic vision as a rock guitarist in a pop driven world is to “...try to make an updated version of rock n roll...to try and get back to that place where rock n’ roll was pop and pop was rock n’ roll...”

So the story goes to the creation of this single, Scott let us know, “I was inspired to write the song one night after bingeing quite a few old movies. I got to thinking about how the old glitzy culture of early Hollywood kinda seems to be gone, and in my mind a good deal of what we consume these days being sort of banal in comparison -- just content, content, content, whatever sells. Maybe I just like the old style. But I figured OK, I'm gonna create this world where Video and the Radio star are both out of a gig now, so they're drinking together, lamenting their loss, and then suddenly figure you know what, let's resurrect what we lost and make it even better.”

As Angelenos ourselves, we have such an immense respect for the forward looking vision that Scott has brought to the table. Seriously, as someone who lives and breathes music such as himself, it is so refreshing to hear a positive force in the industry doing everything he can to not necessarily bring things back to their roots, but to give the true audiophile what they deserve in a well crafted song.

Fast forwarding to the release of “Bringing Hollywood Back to Life” and sharing updated thoughts as we almost roll into November. The live music industry has been halted, with almost no time table of a realistic turn. Sure, there are drive ins and slight alternatives, but nothing will be the same until you can enjoy a live set close to another stranger who appreciates the same kind of music you do. What Scott has done specifically on this song is a sense of foreshadowing that no one could have possibly predicted.

The song itself is a true rocker and the artist has surely shown off his guitar chops and impressive vocal delivery. Coming in at just over 4 minutes, this is the true Los Angeles anthemic single that everyone needs to be listening to. Even if you’re not from the area, if you’re a concert goer or live music lover, the song speaks directly to your soul with its lyricism and all encompassing message.

A positive coming from this though is that Scott has let us know he’s finally begun to start recording again, so at least there’s some good news. Seeing as this was his last single to be released before the stoppage, we can only hope that he’s been busy at work writing and producing more gold to be released out into the world. At this point, we can only imagine the goodness he’s got stocked up and ready to go.

Not every song can be considered an anthem, but when you can vividly imagine yourself singing the lyrics back to the artist in a live setting, well, that’s when you know you’ve got a hit on your hands. With this all being said though, we think it’s about that time we let the reader know to stop reading and start listening.
