Samiama soothes our souls with release of debut EP, In The Valley

Review by Austin Sher

Samiama, formerly known as Samia, is back and at it with the fantastic release of her newest EP, In The Valley. Read along for an in depth look into her most recent work that we’re absolutely loving!

Having separated from Youngane Productions and SONY Music South Africa (JV), Samiama has recently branched out as an independent artist and released this debut EP. If the holdup in being signed onto a label was due to creative freedoms, we sincerely understand the direction she wanted to go in the first place. This isn’t a mainstream pop record by any stretch of the imagination, however, it is quite thought provoking and just short enough for repeated listens and streams.

According to Samiama, “The project is set in the backdrop of the Valley “Abuja” the capital city of Nigeria and speaks on the experiences, desires, and aches or the 21st-century woman in love and lust. It captures the feelings and things not said between lovers and games often played by both sexes.”. The original lead single was for “Fire”, the standout track of the 5 song EP, but truly, every moment on every song shines bright throughout its 12 minute runtime.

The feelings we get overall from the EP are feelings of serenity. Paired with the whirring effects of phaser pedals and the powerful vocals featured throughout, this is a fantastic display of indie music at its highest point. The word “aesthetic” isn’t a word I normally throw around, however, its deserving here. The EP provokes a mood in the best way and takes me out of my head and right into the music. These days when there’s releases of music coming at you at light speed, it’s really nice to listen to something like this where time slows down and the focus is entirely on the lyrics and instrumentation.

Overall, we really did love what we heard, and we think you will too! If Samiama comes to a concert venue near you or you just feel like checking out her discography, visit the following links below:
