Motel 86 share their incredibly dynamic debut self-titled record
Review by Austin Sher
Released just a matter of days after their astounding single, “Back To You”, Motel 86 have shared their self-titled debut album, Motel 86. Do yourselves a favor and read along with us for our review of the record, as well as a refresher on the band.
Having just reviewed their Twerps cover, “Back To You” a little bit earlier this month, we’re incredibly proud to announce that Motel 86’s debut album has been released...and it is amazing. This Redding, California alternative rock band have blended a record of originals and covers that has ultimately culminated in something truly beautiful.
Consisting of 7 songs total (5 originals and 2 covers), Motel 86 shows off the best of what the band is capable of creating. What was originally supposed to be an EP of newer material, frontman Jaden Bricker went digging through old demos and decided to polish up what he had sitting around into some album quality songs. While the two covers on the album are incredible, specifically “Back To You” by Twerps and “End of the World” by Skeeter Davis, the real greatness lies within the originals.
At just 22 minutes in total runtime, the album certainly does not overstay its welcome in the slightest. It gets right to the point and exudes down and dirty rock and roll with some special touches added in as well. For the originals that were created for the album, there truly isn’t one that jumps out as being subpar at all. Although we were immediately drawn to “Daydream” and “Prom Night”, cohesively, the record is dynamic from start to finish.
Seeing as though the band appears to be quite young in their hopefully long and successful careers, we’re thrilled that they’ve come across our way so early in the process. If they’re churning out beauty like this so early on, there’s really no telling how bright their stars can shine a few years down the road. Listening to songs such as the aforementioned “Prom Night” and hearing what they’re capable of on just purely instrumental tracks, the foundation is set, they’re the real deal.
It should really go without saying, but we absolutely love what we’ve heard. This was a wonderfully original and innovative set of songs that Motel 86 has managed to deliver. If you happen to be just a rock and roll lover in general, but even if you’re not, please take the time for a listen. They’re changing the game, keeping it light and interesting, but ultimately having fun while they’re doing so. Enjoy!
