Michelle Green breaks down the intricacies of newest single, "Wings"

Review by Austin Sher

Released officially on February 1st, 2021, Michelle Green has shared her first single of the year, titled “Wings”. Do yourselves a huge favor and read along for our detailed review of the track, as well as a refresher on this blossoming artist.

In case you forgot, it wasn’t too long back that we reviewed Michelle’s stellar single, “30s”. Thankfully she’s back in a big way with a reflective, yet forward thinking single, “Wings”. Self described as an “intimate, beautiful, and melancholic track”, we’d have no choice but to fully agree with that statement. Even better, the single is a preview to her upcoming album Raising Spirits that we’ve been looking forward to for a while now.

Luckily for us, we got a moment to catch up with Michelle before the release of “Wings”, in which she gave us some extremely helpful insight into its origins. According to Michelle, “Wings is actually the last track in the album and was never meant to be released as a single. It has this lo-fi, b-side feel to it and I thought it’d be cool to keep it as a hidden track. When we finished recording it, everyone who listened to it immediately loved it. I couldn’t keep it hidden anymore. I had to give it the spotlight.”

Now while you’ll definitely after listening, we also got a bit of a look into the making of how it came together. Michelle let us know specifically, ”The song is very little produced. We kept it ‘raw’ including the creaks of the piano chair as I was playing it. I wanted to keep it as bare as possible. Wings is about that moment we all know so well - ‘is he into me as much as I’m into him?’. We’ve all been there. It’s about losing yourself in a relationship and sacrificing a part of your life to be with someone- and suddenly starting to question whether the other person is into this as much as you are.”

As hard hitting as the song is after multiple listens, one of the guiding lights and achievements of this whole process is actually the music video that was created to back the track. So the story goes, “I wanted to shoot a very simple, intimate and honest video, stripped of all color and big gestures” she says. “The distorted image throughout the video was also meant to give the viewer a sense of discomfort to make them feel the distorted reality of that moment. The feeling of something unstable.”

Now that we’ve more than familiarized ourselves with how exactly it all came together, it must about that time to actually give it a listen and a watch! Like always, we’ve got all the necessary links posted below in order for you to follow along with Michelle’s career, but to also give the rest of her music a chance. Trust us, we think you may have just found your new favorite artist.
