Dear Genre pens another winner on new album, "Man In Full"

Almost 2 months from its release, Dear Genre’s 2020 album Man In Full is just as great as the day it was released. Do yourselves a favor and read along for our in depth look at the record, in addition to a background on the artist as well.

Dear Genre, also known as Andre Cataldo, has been making music under this name since 2010. With six studio albums under his belt already, Man In Full has the potential to be his best thus far. Drawing inspiration “from the world around him”, Cataldo aims to incorporate the experiences from his life directly into the music he creates.

Lyrically and emotionally, Dear Genre’s overall sound aims to blend the art of storytelling with an indie rock sound that has become an encompassing signature of it all. Additionally, nailing down a specific genre for the artist would be difficult as the incorporation of so much under the rock umbrella is really what makes him special overall. Incorporating the likes of shoegaze, twee-pop, and so much more is just the tip of the iceberg. We suppose you’d really have to give a closer listen to come up with your own judgements.

As for Man In Full, the album comes in at a total of 9 songs, spanning 36 fantastic minutes. Right from the get go, Cataldo manages to do what he does best in mixing a booming bass line with lofi vocals that just go together so perfectly. Seeing as though the record falls in between the sweet spot of 30 to 40 minutes, there’s absolutely no filler featured as well. Everything added in is purposeful and not meant to just take up space; just how we like it.

Now it would certainly be difficult for us to pick out a single favorite track, and while we do recommend you give it a cohesive start to finish listen, there are always those songs that stick out. Specifically, the album opener “Honest Kids”, “Milky Eyes”, and “Dark Hair” we felt represented the overall themes and sounds that the artist was trying to represent. Opening up the record with “Honest Kids” though was really the best way to kick things off, because honestly, there was no way we were ever going to stop after listening to just that. It was too good.

The main point that we’re trying to present here is that Dear Genre has got it all. Experimenting with genres, styles, and ideas that we love has just proven that this album is an absolute winner. Seeing that there’s so much back discography we’ve got to go and check out makes things even more exciting. For the rock and roll lover out there who’s looking for discovery, please look no further, Man In Full is for you. Enjoy!
