Melbourne's Matahara hits it big with second single, "Missify"
Review by Austin Sher
Released this morning on October 20th, 2020, Matahara has officially debuted her wonderful second single, “Missify”. Please read along for our full thoughts on the track, in addition to a bit of background on the artist herself.
Matahara is the project name for Melbourne via Jakarta musician and singer-songwriter, Marissa Yudinar. Following the 20-year-old artist’s debut single, “What a Waste”, released last month, she has taken things up a notch with this fantastic single, “Missify”. Just like ‘What a Waste’, it was written when Marissa was just 16 and recorded in producer Michael Vince-Moin’s bedroom in March of this year, amidst the early days of the coronavirus pandemic. It features lovely artwork by Phantasien, who has previously worked with legends such as Mitski and Khruangbin.
Now that we’ve familiarized ourselves with the work of Matahara, let’s get to the music! Our first impressions on “Missify” were just how well produced it sounded, as well as the immense amount of originality and creativity that was put into it. Seriously, as much as it is a lofi jam with bedroom pop roots, Matahara put her heart and soul into the music, not to mention the lyricism and themes that are covered as well.
While she’s only released two singles up to this point, we see a promising career on the way. This genre of music is what we listen to in our “off hours”, so with that being said, our standards are a bit higher than usual. Consider us incredibly impressed though with what we’ve heard and just how high quality “Missify” turned out.
While it would be near impossible to decipher which of her singles we liked more, let’s just say that we’re truly hoping for more music of the same vein in the hopefully near future. With all this down time due to intense restrictions, we hope that the artist has been busy writing, because we’d absolutely adore an EP or full length album with songs just like these. They’re chill, down to earth, and show the best parts and talents of what the artist is capable of. We’re incredibly impressed with the output so far and will be keeping a close eye on the future musical career of Matahara.
