Mason Owens proves himself on debut EP, "Off The Bat"
Coming up on three months since its official release, Mason Owens’ debut EP Off The Bat is as fantastic as the day it was released. Read along with us for our in-depth look at the record, as well as a background on the artist as well.
Currently representing the Liverpool music scene, Mason Owens has come out of the gate on an extremely hot start. Released via Nifty Records, this singer and songwriter’s debut is a fiery wall of how today’s rock and roll should be sounding. A mix of aggression, imagery filled lyrics, and a vocal delivery that dares to be different.
As Owen displays within his songwriting, he’s no stranger to hardship in the slightest. Having spent a bit of time in jail in his early 20’s, the learning experience for him was a paramount part in what has fueled his growth not only as a person, but as a blossoming independent artist as well.
Coming in at a total of four tracks, spanning 14 minutes in runtime, Owens’ Off The Bat is the perfect amalgamation of noise rock and storytelling. From start to finish, the artist manages to exhibit a cohesive sound and implement a signature feeling that will go on to let you know you’re listening to his specific sense of mastery.
Instrumentally speaking, the EP jumps around a bit in its tone and how it manages to blend the old and new of rock. The first two songs are generally more in your face noise-wise, while the back half we felt focused a bit more lyrically on his story. With that being said though, you’re really getting the best representation of what the artist can bring to the table in the present and in the future. At this point though we’ve listened enough times to know that Owens’ work is the real deal. It’s truly got us waiting for what’s to come in the hopefully near future.
All in all, Off The Bat is an absolute winner. While the artist’s discography isn’t too large just yet, there are some additional tracks on his streaming pages that are absolutely worth the listen as well. Considering there isn’t too much to get through, you might as well give it all a listen as it really is all quality. For now though, we’ll just be listening to this EP over and over until the next big release.
