Hunter Ellis shines on multi genre EP, "Face Tapes"

Review by Austin Sher

Officially released on January 8th, 2021, Hunter Ellis has formally shared his latest EP, Face Tapes. We are loving it! Please read along with us as we share our full thoughts on the record.

For the post rock, surf, and bedroom pop lovers out there, look no further, because Hunter Ellis has just released a true piece of beauty on this 5 song EP, Face Tapes. Featuring a wide range of genres throughout the listen, we were absolutely taken aback during our first listen.

So the story goes according to Hunter, this record was almost an accident in the sense that he had been recording the songs by himself in the studio with the idea of using them on collaborative projects. However after they’d been sitting unused for quite some time, he decided it was about time they saw the light of day. Thankfully he came to that conclusion, because now music lovers across the world can sit and appreciate the hard work that was infused to create this.

As mentioned, there are quite an array of musical genres featured on Face Tapes. The EP opener “The Art of Perspective” takes the listener on a glorious rabbit hole journey through the ins and outs of how post rock should be accomplished. The inclusion of diverse instrumentals sends you to a place of introspection where it’s just you and the music, and wow, is it glorious.

The rest of Face Tapes doesn’t let up in the slightest. Coming in at a total of 5 tracks, spanning 23 minutes in runtime, there’s really something for all types of music listeners here. Adding in lyrics to his music for the first time, Hunter has added a layer that overall complemented the acoustics. To state the bare minimum, we were incredibly impressed with the record and now have every reason to dig into his discography to dig out all the hidden gems he’s been hiding.

While we don’t want to give too much else away, because we’d prefer the reader take a listen for themselves, we can confidently say that we’re recommending and suggesting you take the time out of your busy lives to sit and have a close listen. Hunter is truly onto something here and it’s got us hopeful for more releases just like this in the future.
