Bladderwrack raise the stakes on new ranting single, "Please Sir, We Want Some More"
Review by Austin Sher
While it saw its official release on December 4th, 2020, Bladderwrack’s Christmas-esque single, “Please Sir, We Want Some More” is still as relevant as ever. Do yourselves a favor and read along with us for our detailed review of the track, in addition to a background on the artist as well.
For those unaware, Bladderwrack is a 2-man “Rant Rock” band currently based out of Penge in London. Their self proclaimed protest music has been dominating headlines and media, especially their music videos as well. Written and recorded during lockdown because of COVID, this track is a direct response to the “reports of cronyism” that our present in the Conservative government.
Considering this was our first foray into the music of Bladderwrack, we’re thrilled they came across to us when they did. At a time where so much of the world is suffering, we’re thankful that at least one band out there is stepping up to get the messages across that so many are feeling on a day to day basis. We’re upset and things need to change as soon as possible.
Exhibiting glimmers of punk in its context of lyricism, backed by a full rock and roll feel to it, “Please Sir, We Want Some More” is a song for the ages. Apart from the lyrics, instrumentally it is spot on. Featuring inventive bass lines, subtle horns setting the tones in its atmosphere, and vocals that are right in your face, this song rocks in every way imaginable. Bladderwrack’s sound is so big, you’d imagine that it would be more than just two individuals, however they’ve got enough pent up anger to get their point across.
Having loved this single so much, we had no choice but to dig into their past discography and see what else they’ve been able to crank out. To no surprise in the slightest, it’s just as impressive. Their most recently released singles, “Gammon” and “Dominatrix” are just the type of sound we’ve been looking for in our lives. As punk as it comes, we hope they never change.
As mentioned in our opening line, this song sounds quite Christmas-y in its instrumentation, but let it be known right now, it can be listened to year round with the same feelings of anger. Speaking directly to the band, we love what you’re doing, and we hope you keep it up! For the reader, do yourselves a favor and give this one a listen. Enjoy!
