Solo project, Everchanging Laws, succeed on all new self-titled debut album

Review by Austin Sher

Released on January 22nd, 2021, Everchanging Laws has officially released his self-titled debut record, Everchanging Laws. We are loving it! Please read along with us as we break down our thoughts on the album, in addition to a background on the artist as well.

Everchanging Laws is the solo project of 27 year old Lars Weigmann, who is currently based out of Halle, Germany. Featuring mainly an alternative rock sound, the artist has managed to beyond impress us considering this is a one man band. All instrumentals and vocals were performed by Lars himself. Taking inspiration from classic grunge, indie rock, and bits of shoegaze, this album is an absolute winner.

Coming in at 8 total songs, spanning 26 wonderful minutes, Everchanging Laws have managed to cover a wide array of genres and sounds mixed in throughout the listen from start to finish. According to Lars, the album “deals with themes of holding on to bad habits, self-reflection and letting go”. Listening closely to his deeply personal lyricism behind the music, we commend the artist on being able to so confidently loosen up and share his stories.

Truly, the mix of shoegaze, indie rock, and grunge are so wonderfully present and apparent on the album. As fans of all the genres separately, we usually tend to judge a bit harsher considering we have a higher standard. With that being said though, the artist without a doubt has impressed us with his unique capability to create an original composition and sound that is not often being done. Not necessarily that it’s a lost genre by any means, but that so much of it sounds the same. Lars has delicately created something that all listeners alike can relate to and take solace in.

Instrumentally, it is quite diverse from front to back. We had to consistently keep reminding ourselves that everything we heard was coming from one talented musician. That makes it all the better, especially knowing that one person had the ideas and then confidently created something from scratch. A new dream of ours would be to witness this in full live, so we hope that Lars can enlist a band who can keep up with what he’s created.

If it isn’t clear and apparent by now, we’re absolutely recommending that all reading this take the time to give it a listen. Even if the listed genres aren’t something you’re relatively familiar with or into, give it a chance. Treating it as an indie rock record overall, it’s experimental enough to keep even the most passive of listeners interested in what’s to come next. Trust us, it’s something you need in your life.

For now though, we’ll keep spinning this record as it has become a staple in our rotation. At this point, we can’t wait for what’s next!
