Hidden Things previews new album with single, "What More"
Freshly released on August 11th, 2022, the latest single from Hidden Things has arrived and it’s seriously superb. Read on for our in-depth review of “What More”, as well as a much needed background on this talented artist.
From the mind of Brooklyn-based singer and songwriter Greg Adams has come his newest musical endeavor, a project called Hidden Things. With a full length album on the way that’s titled NIGHT WORK, Greg has given listeners a taste of what’s to come with his newest single “What More”, which has only amplified our hype going forward. If for some reason you’re unfamiliar with his work though, this is certainly the best possible time to explore before more gets shared!
On the background of its meaning, Greg has said, “the song is mainly about denial as a defense mechanism. Sometimes we’re forced to settle for Plan B or C because plan A was a bust, which is fine, but then there’s this tendency to play it off like everything turned out exactly as it was supposed to, as if we’re actually grateful for our failures, like they were necessary to our achieving self-actualization, or whatever you want to call it”. The song is as impressive on the lyrical end as it is on the sound and style, but we’d be lying if we said we didn’t completely relate to the sentiment. Instead of having another love song in the world, it’s so refreshing to hear an artist sort of bare their soul on this personal experience.
As for the song itself, it definitely borders on the line of a modern take on indie pop, however there’s tons of influences and inspirations on the production end that took shape of decades past. For instance, we loved the way that Greg’s vocals fit in so effortlessly into the mix, yet never felt overbearing. They’re not quite lofi and fuzzy, but they serve as such a needed constant while the instrumentation goes off and does its own thing. We found him to be a great storyteller as well, leading the listener line by line as you get hooked on what he might say next. If anything, it’s given us a great idea about what the entirety of NIGHT WORK might sound like, and in our eyes, we’re really looking forward to that album experience once it gets shared in full.
