Élodie Orsei excels on genre-blended debut EP, "FRENCH TOAST"
Rich in culture, production, and vibrance, Élodie Orsei has finally let loose her outstanding debut EP titled FRENCH TOAST. Keep reading for an in-depth analysis of the record, in addition to a much needed background on this growing artist.
Both written and produced by Élodie Orsei, it’s been a long time coming after the first two single releases “Crème de la crème” and “You’re delicious” that were shared earlier this year. Now out in full, FRENCH TOAST alludes to Élodie’s ties to being French Canadian, as well as the food itself, among many other aspects that we’ll cover soon. Through our now multiple listens though, she’s pristinely crafted this inspired mix of folk, soul, and even glimmers of R&B for a debut EP that has surpassed all expectations. Of course, we’re urging all the readers to hit the play button as soon as possible.
Sung partly in French and English, Élodie actually gave us a background in which she explains, “As a French-Canadian, raised in a minority, my French culture and language is a big part of my identity, but so is expressing myself in English. I love being able to write in both languages and mix them together, just like how they take shape in my life on a day-to-day basis”. The record is a representation of the intertwining between these two cultures and the importance of her life, however we felt that it added such a lovely artist mix by switching between both. We don’t speak French, we’ll make that clear, but the emotion in her delivery transcended language and added such a complexity to the entirety of FRENCH TOAST.
Through five wonderful tracks, we found ourselves instantly in love with the way that record made us feel. Overall it certainly holds relaxing and calming elements through the production, yet Élodie takes artistic risks to sort of perk up the listener’s attention. The opener for example, “Un p’tit cafe” was a solid choice because it gives you a fair overview of what to expect, but there are still twists and turns that the instrumentation and even atmospheres take to keep you from switching songs. Plain and simple though, we sincerely enjoyed our listen and will undoubtedly be coming back for more when the mood arises.
