Matthew Hallows details his personal experiences on debut, "Don't Turn out the Lights"

Highlighting his seemingly infinite talents, Matthew Hallows has finally shared his long-awaited and soul-filled debut EP, Don’t Turn out the Lights. Please keep reading for a closer look into the record, as well as a background on the artist.

Currently based out of the United Kingdom, Matthew Hallows is an upcoming singer and songwriter who’s laid it all out on the line lyrically and artistically for a memorable debut EP, Don’t Turn out the Lights. Showcasing his passionate vocals and a fairly refined instrumental section, he shifts the listener’s focus to the different stages of his life and relationships chronologically throughout the listen. We were entranced from the opening notes and are absolutely recommending all give this one a fair listen.

Coming in at 5 total tracks, spanning right around 17 minutes in length, Matthew immediately takes the listener on a journey through the stages of a typical relationship. Through the initial “honeymoon phase”, to the pain and confusion that a breakup can bring, you’re literally hooked on every word as you ride the rollercoaster of his life. Now while we did say the instrumentation is fairly refined, it certainly opens up in moments for more upbeat and involved songs depending on the stage that he speaks of. Ultimately it’s a really cohesive record that not only grips you emotionally, but feels downright relatable based on personal experiences.

Through evocative mood shifts, tonal changes, and Matthew’s impeccable vocal delivery, it’s a debut EP that we have no notes to give on. There’s plenty of artist influences that come through from greats like Ed Sheeran or Jason Mraz, but the uniqueness and sincerity of it all is 100% Matthew Hallows. As musically impressive as Don’t Turn out the Lights really is though, we do feel the crux and attention grabber of it all is the storytelling. It’s not often that an artist so openly and brazenly lets you into the hardships of their life like this, but that’s the winning quality that this intimate listen really has to offer. We’ll be patiently awaiting a follow up, hopefully coming soon.
