Donovan Keith breaks down his funk-inspired EP, "First Time" - Interview
Having just released an EP called First Time that has reinvigorated our love for everything funk and soul, it was only right we brought on Donovan Keith for an in-depth interview surrounding the record. Make sure to watch our full interview below.
Currently based out of Austin, Texas, Donovan Keith has managed to create something incredibly special on his EP First Time. Effortlessly blending together his signature style of soul, funk, rock, and of course his vintage-sounding vocals, it didn’t take long for us to fall head over heels in love with the record. Of course getting to hear about it from the man himself was a total treat, so not only do we recommend checking out the EP, but the conversation as well.
For those somehow out of the loop on Donovan Keith, he’s been making a name for himself consistently throughout Texas for the last few years now. Sharing a collection of singles over the years and gearing up for a massive debut solo album in 2022, now is literally the perfect time to hop on his bandwagon. Big things are coming for Donovan and we’re beyond ready to see what he cooks up in the near future.
As for First Time, it’s not often we immediately get sucked into a record, and even at just four songs he’s masterfully created all the good vibes. Typically we’d recommend a specific single to get you hooked, however we’ll recommend you dive right into the opener and title track “First Time” and let it flow through till the end. At right around 13 minutes, you can fully expect some compelling instrumentation from his strong backing band and Donovan’s vocals that’ll make you ascend. This is the type of record that seamlessly fuses sounds from decades of the past, but delicately mixes it with the modern. Truly, there’s a million positives we could point out about it and it would be a shame if we spoiled it any more than we have.
