Sandy Hawkins channel a nostalgic sound on single, "Daddy Didn't Want Me To Sing"

Continuing on a stellar trajectory into 2022, Sandy Hawkins have gifted an end of the year gift with an all new single titled “Daddy Didn’t Want Me To Sing”. We’re loving it! Read on for our full review of the track, as well as a background on the band.

Currently based out of Los Angeles, more specifically in Echo Park, Sandy Hawkins are a pandemic-born band that are putting their own modern spin on what we feel is a heavily 80’s inspired sound. On their latest song called “Daddy Didn’t Want Me To Sing”, the band are revolutionizing their style once again with a song that instantly hooks in the listener and doesn’t let go until the closing moments. If this is your introduction to the group, you’ve discovered them at the perfect time.

Says the band on the background of the song, “Although this is not the Sandy Hawkins origin story, the three of us each have elements of our own lives that have contributed to this song and help paint the picture of heading to the big city in search of something more,”.

Speaking directly on the instrumentation side of things, we couldn’t help but make the connection between the repeated guitar riff and “Jessie’s Girl”. While they’re eerily reminiscent of each other in tone and cadence, it didn’t stop us from falling head over heels in love with this unique take on indie pop rock. Everything about this power trio has quickly shown us that they’ve got the creative chops to continue to make compelling and innovative music, which is mainly why “Daddy Didn’t Want Me To Sing” resonated with us.

The mix of upbeat, vibrant, and ultimately feel good vibes that the track exudes wasn’t what we were expecting on our initial listen, but definitely delivered in the department of putting smiles on our collective faces. This is certainly a band that we can’t wait to see take shape in the coming months and years. As mentioned, if this is your introduction to the band, you’re in for a treat no matter where you fall on the musical spectrum.
