Out this past week on May 7th, 2021, Dolly Ave has just shared her breathtaking debut record, Sleep. We are in love with it! Please read along with us for our full and complete album breakdown, as well as a background on the artist as well.

Weaving and fusing multiple genres such as pop, R&B, electronic, & soul, Dolly Ave is back in a big way on her debut record, Sleep. As Dolly is eager to highlight the conversation about being a Vietnamese-American creative, which is ethnically extremely rare in the entertainment industry, she’s made a bold statement with nearly every theme covered on this record. Our first impression on our listen is that we honestly could not be more impressed.

It takes a true artist and expert to so delicately put together a collection of so many sounds in a way that she’s done it here. Coming in at 7 total tracks, spanning 20 minutes in run time, this collection of lo-fi tracks are moving through the “ebbs and flows of a relationship”. According to Dolly though, “It's not a heartbreak album,” though she created the album freshly after a break-up while she was still in the throes of finding closure. “It's definitely me finding empowerment in the vulnerability of each stage.”

Our first listen was an interesting and quite immediate immersion into her world. Almost right after the opener “People'' started, Dolly took all of her important elements and swayed the listener into her point of view. Productionally speaking, this is one of the smoothest, cleanest, and most atmospheric records that’s come our way in a long time. Paired with her heaven-like vocals, there isn’t a single dull moment on the entirety of Sleep.

It’s almost difficult to put into words of how euphoric and beautiful the album has sounded to us. Not to overhype or over exaggerate, but there were just so many “wow” moments featured on these 7 songs, it would seriously be difficult to pick out a favorite. Our suggestions here would be to just start play from the beginning and let it all flow through you. This is a record that we’re highly recommending, and an artist that you should be following along with as well.
