Derek Skelton hits the high notes on newest single, "Island Girl"
Kicking off February on a serious high note, “Island Girl’, the newest single from Derek Skelton has finally been released to the world. Our detailed thoughts, analysis, and artist bio can be found by reading onward.
Alabama-born singer and songwriter Derek Skelton has long pursued a career in music. Thankfully for those dreams, he’s incredibly well equipped to succeed. When he’s not recording in Nashville though, he serves in the United States Air Force, where he’s currently stationed in Hawaii. Garnering a large following on TikTok, he’s proved himself over and over again in the country music scene.
His talent certainly shows as he was awarded Breakout Artist of the Year in 2019 by Off The Row. Since then, he’s parlayed his output into a total of now four wonderful songs. On “Island Girl” specifically, he’s somewhat changed his sound and gone into more of a slow jam route. After multiple listens of the track, we’re loving the direction he’s gone and really hope he embraces these changes in the future.
Now putting a finger on what specific genre this could be considered, that would be tough. Impressively enough, he’s managed to take glimmers of country, straightforward singer/songwriter tropes, and even blended a little bit of power pop to come up with something incredibly diverse. With each single release, he’s moving further and further into crafting a signature sound for himself. In the future when he’s got plenty of albums out, you’ll know immediately, that’s a Derek Skelton song.
While it’s been less than a year since his debut “Can’t Outlove Me” was released, Derek has taken large strides to solidify himself as a serious player within the scene. The song was officially shared on February 1st of 2021, so we’re crossing our fingers that not only will there be more released by the end of the year, but maybe even a full EP or record to follow. Hearing a cohesive record from the artist would be much appreciated as we’d really like to see what other themes or stories he’d be able to cover. It seems as though he’s pulling from real life experiences, so in order to write, he’ll need to live!
Overall though, this was a super intriguing release from Derek Skelton. As mentioned, we love the direction he’s managed to take, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on what’s to come. No rush to him though, because for now, we’ll be streaming “Island Girl”.
