Anna May shines through on her stripped back record, "I'm Still Thinking Of You"
Review by Austin Sher
Shared earlier this year, Anna May has released her beautifully acoustic new record, I’m Still Thinking Of You. Please read along with us as we share our thoughts on the album, in addition to a background on the artist as well.
Describing her music as a “bleeding heart stream of consciousness poems”, Anna May’s music is also about memory and meditation; streaked with tones of jazz and classic folk. Seeking influence from artists such as Shawn Colvin, Neil Young, Billie Holiday, Leonard Cohen, and more, we are loving what we’ve heard on I’m Still Thinking Of You.
For a little while now, Anna has performed at many notable venues, including The Wildflower Arts & Music Festival, Boston Arts Festival, Crying Wolf in Nashville, and so many more. She’s also had the privilege of opening up for award winning songwriter, Jann Klose. Taking all the inspiration from others and within, she has created true beauty throughout this album.
Coming in at 7 tracks, spanning 30 wonderful minutes, Anna explores personal themes through her deep lyricism in a minimalistic way, mainly featuring her angelic vocals and ukulele. Instrumentally speaking, it’s quite strippped back in the way that it allows for the focus to be on the stories told and to really let the most important parts of her music take the forefront. The stage is set as sometimes the less you use, the better things turn out. Anna has quickly proved on this record that with that approach, it’s much easier to focus on her art.
As well as her release of this album, she’s also had a string of lovely singles shared in 2020 such as “Careless” and another shorter EP, Kites. After listening through the record a few times, we’re really crossing our fingers over here that more is released from this artist in the New Year. As new experiences come her way and she seeks to express that through her music, we’ll be listening in along the way for much more to come.
With this all being said though, if you’re in the mood for something straightforward, stripped back, and a thing of true honest beauty, look no further, because Anna May is the artist you need to be listening to as soon as you can.
