Agon Branza releases his stunning debut single, "Glitter Guns"
Review by Austin Sher
Lisbon born and London based, Agon Branza, has just debuted his fantastic and unique new single, “Gitter Guns”. Read along as we give an in-depth review of the track, as well as a bit of background into this up and coming artist.
Agon Branza is an award-winning singer-songwriter and composer whose work is inspired by the contrasting worlds of classical music, confessional songwriting, and avant-garde electronic production. While he cites his musical influences as Bjork, Woodkid, and John Grant, we couldn’t help but feel that there was a huge dose of Radiohead style production featured all over “Glitter Guns”. We absolutely loved what we heard, as it was both cinematic and theatrical in its execution. The song felt like it could have been pulled right out of a thriller film, in the best way possible.
“Glitter Guns is an inner dialogue on how apathy can take over in the face of overwhelming prejudice and discrimination when change seems next to impossible”, Agon says. “In the end, it all boils down to accountability and a deafening sense of guilt, trying to move towards change and wanting to do better.” We fully agree with that statement, as the music and lyricism perfectly lined up to what Branza tried to incorporate as the overall message.
What we loved so much about the song in particular was not necessarily the instrumentation, although we found it to be super unique, but Branza’s stunning classical vocals that seemingly took over the stage of the track. The atmosphere he was able to create on “Glitter Guns” is one of the most unique things i’ve heard in awhile, honestly. While Branza classifies this particular genre as “chamber pop”, with the added phasers and other effects, it felt a bit psychedelic as well. There was enough going on to keep us interested throughout that we had to go back multiple times for many listens to really uncover the subtleties that were delicately placed in.
In addition to his music production, Agon's voice has caught the attention of Manu Delago, with whom he recently performed at EartH Hackney. He has also performed with Nitin Sawhney, Katie Melua, Guy Garvey (Elbow), Rick Astley, Orlando Weeks, Kelly Lee Owens, Another Sky, Eska, Cerys Matthews, Ruby Turner, Alev Lenz, Glen Scott, and the BBC Orchestra. Agon had a song of his performed with London Contemporary Voices at Southbank's Queen Elizabeth Hall. Branza is definitely moving on up within the world of music, and we’re here for the ride. We can’t wait to see how bright Branza’s star is going to shine after the release of his next project.
