Rodney Owl debuts his new single, "Waiting", ahead of full album release

Review by Austin Sher

Galway, Ireland’s own, Rodney Owl, is back with an incredible unique new single, titled “Waiting”. Read along as we give an in-depth review on what we thought of the song, as well as a bit of background on the artist himself.

In his free time he’s making incredibly expressive and beautiful music for the masses, that we hope gets listen to as quickly as possible. We spoke with Rodney Owl about the song, and this is what he let us know, “The song was written and recorded during lockdown and a certain foreboding and sarcastic anxiety is palpable throughout. The vocal nicely  balances out the music and holds together the time ticking of the piano, while the guitar beats it’s own path through the melee, reminiscent of the sounds on Radiohead’s Kid A. It was written solely as a piano and vocal tune, but later I added some crunchy guitar lines, including the theremin, synth bass, vocal harmonies, and broken beats.

As an up and coming artist, we’d love to give a background on your new favorite artist. Rodney Owl is a music-mad war baby, thoughtful and aggressive, alternative easy listening. Originally from Co.Armagh in the north of Ireland, he is now based in Galway in the west. Last year saw Rodney Owl open shows for Malojian, Duke Special and Nick Harper among others, as well as headlining a number of his own stripped-down 2/3 piece shows. Recording of Rodney Owl’s second album is on-going, it’s being released on a song by song basis, 6 songs have been born so far and the 7th single is due in August. Well we are definitely looking forward to the release of that album, because we absolutely love what we heard on “Waiting”.

Getting into the review of the music, this is a song that was very expressive and absolutely reminiscent of Radiohead that was previously mentioned. The song is lush, complete with unique instrumentation that kept our ears glued from the beginning. Specifically speaking about the instruments, the inclusion of the theremin is something that is not often used in the music we hear, but was extremely fitting to the overall tones of the song. At a 5 minute track length, there was enough going on throughout the time that it kept us active and listening. We can’t help but mention Owl’s vocals on the track too, they were quite impressive and acted as an additional instrument in the song. Very reminiscent of how Thom Yorke features his voice as an instrument, in addition to the backing instruments.

Overall, we really enjoyed what we heard on “Waiting” and are especially looking forward to the album that is released in the future. Keep an eye out for Rodney Owl and his upcoming works.
