Whitney surprise release legendary John Denver and SWV covers
Article by Austin Sher
When Whitney releases anything, it’s a momentous occasion! When they cover two fantastic songs like John Denver’s Take Me Home Country Roads and SWV’s Rain, you really can’t help but listen and smile.
Early this morning, Whitney and Waxahatchee grouped together to record an incredible of John Denver’s most well known song, Take Me Home Country Roads. It provides an almost healing presence that we all really do need in a time like this. The sweet sound of Julien singing along to this timeless classic is truly beautiful. The pairing of the two groups getting together on this track is a thing of beauty really. It’s not quite a full reimagining of the song, it’s a faithful cover that breathes new life into a version that’s just overall positive and gives off real homey calming vibes. Needless to say, we dig it quite a bit.
As for the cover of SWV’s Rain, does the song sound a bit familiar to you? Perhaps a little too close to Childish Gambino’s Redbone? That’s precisely it! Gambino has gone on record saying that this song was essentially reworked, or at least the melodies and harmonies, to provide us with what his now version of Redbone is. Whitney’s version is faithful as can be to the original version and will definitely put the song into ears of those who were never really familiar with the original version.
Waking up to two of your favorite songs covered by two of your favorite artists is one of the best ways to start your Tuesday after a busy Memorial Day Weekend. At this point, you should definitely be done reading and get to listening to these amazing “new” songs!
