Pearl Charles on "Between Dreams", Save Our Stages, and her upcoming sophomore album
Interview by Austin Sher
We recently had the unique opportunity to sit with Pearl Charles and ask her a few questions on a variety of topics. Read along as we dive deep into her recent quarantine experiences, the recent release of Between Dreams, her upcoming album release (yay!), and so much more!
WWAM: Was the release of Between Dreams something that was originally planned, or was it more of a quarantine-style release where you’d been sitting on it for a while and decided to put it out.
Pearl Charles: Yeah, so it was my manager’s idea and we’d been kicking it around for a while to release specifically the “Sleepless Dreamer” demo. In the end though, it was definitely brought on by being in quarantine. I actually have a new album that I’ll be releasing in January. Everytime we were trying to pick a release date, something else came up. We realized that we couldn’t hold off forever on it, so the album’s going to be coming in January, but you’ll be getting some singles and music videos starting in September.
WWAM: So obviously things are tough right now, but what about being in lockdown has been your favorite. Specifically in this line of work, what’s been the highlights.
Pearl Charles: Well now that everything’s been kind of stripped down to the basics, I feel like what I miss the most is playing music with my friends. I think that’s really the reality of it, I miss playing for people. I’ll never take playing for granted again.
WWAM: Was there a specific moment in your childhood or early adulthood that you decided you wanted to be an artist?
Pearl Charles: Well both of my parents are actually artists, so there was always encouragement to test out all forms of art. When I was young I was really into musical theater, I really liked singing and performing. As I got older I just got into the rock and roll type of style. Being in a band was always going to be more fun than being on Broadway. I actually have a lifelong dream of being in the Mamma Mia musical because I love ABBA.
WWAM: Do you feel that you suffer from Imposter Syndrome?
Pearl Charles: That’s really funny, because I have a new song on my new record called “Imposter”. So I would say 100%. I’ve explored that deeply and will soon be brought out to the world, it’s going to be one of the singles.
WWAM: Was there a specific concert you played that validated all the hard work you’ve put in over the years?
Pearl Charles: Yeah actually, there was this benefit that used to happen that Jonathan Wilson put on. He would do a benefit around Christmas time with Mike Campbell from The Heartbreakers and so I got to join in on the group sing along towards the end. I got to sing along and be on stage with Jackson Browne and Jon Fogerty. It was really really cool, I felt like it was a dream come true.
WWAM: What’s your favorite Los Angeles venue to either play at or watch a show at?
Pearl Charles: There’s a lot of good ones! I definitely want to give a shoutout to Save Our Stages because we’ll see what’s still kicking around, especially because The Satellite just went down. The Troubador is probably one of the most iconic spots in LA, I even donated to their GoFundMe. I hope they can make it through, it’s just so historical, it’s such an amazing spot.
WWAM: What have been some of your favorite releases from other artists this year?
Pearl Charles: Well, I know that Rilo Kiley is about to re-release their first ever EP. There’s so many artists digging through their archives right now, so there’s so much being put out. Margo Price released an album, Texas Gentleman released an album, Courtney Marie Andrews just released an album today. All of those are artists that I love and I think it’s great that they’re still putting stuff out. We need music during this time anyway.
If you haven’t yet listened to Between Dreams, we highly recommend you do so! For everything Pearl Charles and to stay up to date with all of her future news and releases, please check out the following links below.
