Weyes Blood Unveils New Song "A Given Thing" at Ventura Music Hall

In one of the most intimate shows we’ve ever had the opportunity to attend, Weyes Blood marked her first public performance in over two years last night at the Ventura Music Hall in Ventura, California. Sold out and filled to max capacity with eager concert goers, we were there front and center to recount a night that we’ll surely remember forever.

After performing a few nights back to a private group at UCLA’s Royce Hall, Weyes Blood marked this as her first public performance since before the pandemic. Having been longtime fans ourselves, we finally got the chance to witness Natalie up close and personal and legitimately she is one of the most sensational performers we’ve seen in our lifetime. Transcendent through her vocals and matching with comedic capabilities for the in-between banter, she spanned her growing discography for a show that lasted upwards of an hour and a half.

Kicking off the night, the first four songs of her set were some of our favorites off of Titanic Rising in which she enthusiastically played songs like “Everyday” and “Something To Believe”. One of the most astounding parts of the show wasn’t necessarily a specific song she played, rather believing with our eyes and ears that her voice is somehow better in person. We attend multiple concerts per week seeing some of our favorite artists on the planet, but it’s not often that our jaws collectively and literally drop when someone opens their mouth. Hitting note after note with ease and a humble feeling, we’re confident to say that Natalie Mering has one of the greatest voices in indie music currently.

Although it was only a 12 song set, it was an instantly immersive experience that truly felt like we were in a time machine. With visual effects mimicking a space odyssey and her astoundingly talented band backing her up, it was a show for the books to say the least. After her main set though, she came back out to a roaring applause and an encore that featured a cover of The Hollies’ “The Air That I Breathe”. We’ve always had an appreciation for the song, but hearing her own rendition of it was something to behold. At this point, there’s probably a YouTube video with the whole thing.

Closing out the set, we got news that there is a new album on the way! It’s all finished according to Natalie, and while there isn’t a release date, she did mention it should be out sometime in the Fall with singles to follow leading up to the big day. She previewed one of the slower songs according to her called “A Given Thing” and it was hauntingly beautiful to say the least. While it was relatively stripped back in instrumentation, we can only imagine the final version with production flourishments will bring it to full life. Her voice sounded lovely on it and we can’t wait to hear it when it’s out in the world.

For now though, please check out some of the pictures we snapped while attempting to live in the moment. Enjoy!
