Animal Collective Treat the Fans to Rarities at LA's Greek Theatre
Completely melting our minds throughout their near two hour performance, Animal Collective made their way to the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles for a momentous night that fully spanned their massive discography. We were there right in front to fully recount the evening, and have a full photo gallery below that we highly recommend everyone check out to see the highlights.
Still fresh off the release of 2022’s Time Skiffs, Animal Collective have returned to their absolute full form not only in sound but in the aura that made them special to us in the first place. We’ve had the opportunity to see them in the past, and it’s never disappointing, but you almost certainly never know what type of setlist you’re going to get regardless of the tour. Last night however, the crowd in Los Angeles were treated to some serious rarities such as “In The Flowers” off Merriweather Post Pavilion, “Screens” off ODDSAC, and an outrageous closing of the show with “For Reverend Green” off of Strawberry Jam.
Honestly, we go to a ton of shows that have sort of blended together over the past few months for example, but even getting to be in the photo pit two feet away from the band gave us an internal joy that’s seriously difficult to explain. Some bands hold special places in your heart for sentimental or novelty reasons and Animal Collective is 100% one of those groups. No matter the album that’s deemed a hit or miss, they’re the type of group that you’ll stick with on any occasion. From start to finish of their set, the pulsating energy in the Greek Theatre was palpable and close to every song got a roaring applause at the beginning, middle, and end. It feels as though the band has strayed away from playing songs off of Merriweather Post Pavilion in some capacity, but to get 3 played felt like the biggest treat ever.
As for their latest Time Skiffs, it’s legitimately been on constant repeat since the day it dropped earlier this year. We’d been trying to envision just how exactly these songs would translate in a live setting and boy did they. Specifically the drop on “Prester John” into the latter half of the track is when we felt the show really started. “Strung With Everything” was a close second of those songs played, but really the entire performance was a hypnotizing masterpiece. It’s been 22 years since Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished and it feels like they’re still in their prime.
If you’ve yet to let the music of Animal Collective into your life for whatever reason, please make it a point today or whenever you’re reading this to do so. We’ve also included all the important links below to listen, follow along, and keep up with all major news coming from the band. Enjoy!
