King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard Make History at Red Rocks Marathon Set

Arguably the best of the three nights, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard rolled into the great venue on the planet, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and delivered a three hour marathon set that we truly haven’t been able to stop thinking about. Please read on for our full review of the night’s events below.

Split up into two sets that spanned the band’s insane discography, we’ve honestly been dreaming of this day since we bought tickets in 2019. Finally though, the time came, and we walked into Red Rocks for our first experience at the venue, one that most likely will never be topped. Opening the night up was Leah Senior and The Murlocs, two artists that we’ve been dying to see since we first discovered them years ago. Serving as the openers for the night and setting the tone, the crowd was beyond amped up and feeling the electricity in the crowd was a feeling we’ll never forget.

Finally, the moment arrived, the band hit the stage, and immediately jumped into a suite of songs off one of our personal favorites, Murder of the Universe. With 17 total songs played just in the first set, it honestly became difficult to fathom that life or music could get better than this. The way that they managed to control the energy of the set, switching between their catalog, but specifically making jumps between Omnium Gatherum, Infest the Rat’s Nest, and even Oddments just in the first set. Through the first hour and a half of insanity, you needed to remind yourself to not go too hard because there was another half. Thankfully though, their music is so packed with energy, you didn’t need to try too hard to get dancing.

After a quick 15 minute break featuring the music of Made in Timeland, fans were treated to a nearly 20-25 minute rendition of “Head On/Pill”, a song we haven’t witnessed live since back in 2016 at a tiny show of theirs. Extending it into “Am I In Heaven”, then ripping it up again with more Rat’s Nest songs, the capability, versatility, and sheer will power of these guys is insane. You’re trying to watch the show and them play, all the while singing at the top of your lungs, there becomes too much stimuli to function or focus at most points. Fans thousands deep are losing their collective minds, but we all know that without a doubt we’re literally witnessing history.

Wrapping it up, the band brought Leah Senior out to sing her parts of some of Murder of the Universe tracks, which was lovely. They ended their reign at Red Rocks with a superb rendition of “Float Along - Fill Your Lungs”, a song we hold dearly to our hearts. Like always, if you haven’t yet experienced the greatness of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, now is the time to do some exploration. Enjoy!
