Acid Dad Transcend Through Sound & Style at LA's El Rey Theatre
With a name like Acid Dad, you might expect some burnt out middle aged men covering some Dark Side of the Moon in a dive bar during late night happy hour. That's what I was expecting while heading to the El Rey in Los Angeles on Wednesday night. However, once I planted myself into the middle of a pretty full crowd for an opening band, the red curtains opened and I was greeted by a sound and style that I was unprepared for.
Acid Dad played as a 3 piece band with dual guitarists, Vaughn Hunt, Sean Fahey, and Trevor Mustoe on the drums in the back holding down the fort. They specifically called out the lighting tech, Webb Hunt, who had been traveling with them for the entire leg of this tour with Psychedelic Porn Crumpets as a 4th member of the band, and we could see why. The visuals were their own entirely captivating part of the show. The visuals ranged from vintage motorcycle footage to psychedelic, rainbow hyper-speed. The latter made the band seem like they were traveling through time and space. As if that wasn't enough, that was just the visual element.
The band did their due and then some playing an exciting blend of fuzzy garage rock with a uniquely screaming psych lead guitar. We loved watching the 2 front men from New York alternate playing the lead guitar and singing the melodies, not just from song to song, but even within songs. Having two different guitar tones, playing styles, and vocal sounds to carry the melody added a sense of disorientation that really added to the psychedelia of their performance. The band sounded extremely tight and we weren't the only ones to think so as the audience danced and moshed appropriately throughout the whole show.
While unable to confirm, sources of intuition tell me that these guys were not only not middle aged, but also not dads. The one thing I can confirm though is that Acid Dad rocks and we will definitely go see them at any opportunity coming up in the future. Acid Dad just completed their US tour as opening band for Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and some other miscellaneous shows including a rockin performance at Desert Daze.
