Fleet Foxes Deliver a Career-Spanning Set at LA's Greek Theatre
Within the first three songs, Fleet Foxes’ frontman Robin Pecknold quickly proclaimed that this was the best concert he’s ever played, and honestly, we agree. Last night at the legendary Greek Theater in Los Angeles, California, the band put on an extraordinary performance and career-spanning setlist on their current Shore tour. We were there to recount the night, so please enjoy our show review in full below.
If for some reason you’re unfamiliar with the music of Fleet Foxes, the band has been setting the tone within the indie folk genre for 10+ years at this point. Never missing on any of their album releases, the band’s latest record is titled Shore. While we’ve consistently gone back to it over the past year of its release, we never could have imagined how hard some of these songs would hit in a live setting. We had an opportunity to see Fleet Foxes co-headline with Beach House about 4 years ago at the historic Hollywood Bowl, but somehow they’ve continued to get better and Robin’s unique voice has aged like a fine wine.
Playing nearly two hours and getting through all the hits, we were super surprised about how much banter there was in between songs as well. Robin surely wanted to show off how hip he was, mainly perfecting his Gen Z slang, but it really added to the lightness and good-natured feel that the show provided as a whole. Speaking on the music though, the band powered through a whopping 24 song setlist that included the greatest hits from Helplessness Blues, Crack-Up, and everything else in between. The unexpected inclusion of the night was a sensational cover of Big Red Machine’s “Phoenix” that Robin guest vocaled on. Seriously, if you’ve been skipping out on How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last?, then you’ve been missing out on one of the most underrated records of the last 5 years.
Anyway, in a sold out Greek Theater nearing almost 7,500 attendees, it’s legitimately one of the most energy filled sets we’ve ever witnessed at the venue. Over the years you amass die hard fans and it seemed as though each and every one showed up for a historic night that will surely go down in Fleet Foxes history. Closing the set out with “Helplessness Blues” was a dream come true, but everything prior to it put us in a dreamlike state that we’ll be reminiscing on for years to come.
