Courtney Barnett Debuts "Anonymous Club" Documentary at LA's Brain Dead Studios

After 3+ years of gathering footage, editing, and living through valuable life experiences, Courtney Barnett’s music documentary Anonymous Club has continued to make waves. It takes a look at her touring days, mainly during the release of Tell Me How You Really Feel, but ultimately goes much deeper into the lifestyle. We got the opportunity to watch it at Brain Dead Studios in Los Angeles with a full Q&A session from Courtney afterwards. Here are some things below that we took from the experience, plus a small photo gallery at the bottom to relive the night.

Having been a Courtney fan for years now and getting the opportunity to see her performances all over the world, what an extreme honor it was to get a glimpse into who the artist is behind the music. Put together and directed by Danny Cohen who was also present at the Q&A fielding answers, the two really put everything into perspective. Now obviously we don’t want to give too much away because we’d prefer you watch it for yourselves, but even if you’re not familiar with the artist’s music, it gives an honest look at touring and how it’s not all glammed up like you’d imagine. So much of the documentary was nicely shot B roll with overdubs from Courtney sort of highlighting her emotional states at the moment, but the harder hitting parts were her speaking openly and candidly directly to the camera.

For any touring artist out there no matter how big or small you are, there’s a certain consistency that you end up craving as the tours run longer and longer. Don’t get us wrong, she certainly seemed to have infinite highs playing her music for crowds all around the world, but it comes at the expense of a bit of normality at the same time. The documentary runs right around an hour and a half but seriously zooms right by as you get sucked into the plot. A question asked during the Q&A session was how really a comment on how well this stacks up to other music documentaries that inflate the artist’s ego, but thankfully this did the complete opposite and just promoted the truth from beginning to end.

A last sentiment we’ll leave you with is to please give Anonymous Club a watch whenever you get the opportunity. We’ve included all the important links below to do so, as well as Courtney Barnett’s social media links to keep up with what’s new. Enjoy!
