Review by Austin Sher
Debuting less than a month ago on July 31st, 2020, Zuriel Nena is back with a remarkable new single, titled “Believer”. Read on with us as we break down our thoughts on the track, as well as a bit of background on the artist herself.
Zuriel Nena, also known as Zuriel, is a Nigerian Alternative Hip-hop-R&B, Afro-Soul singer. In addition, she’s also a Songwriter, Sancer and Entrepreneur. The artist was originally born in Lagos, Nigeria and started singing and dancing at an early age of three. Her parents noticed she exuded so much talent in music and encouraged her to perform in school dance dramas and singing competitions.
Zuriel let us know, “I loved music from an early age. My parents would play old records from Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Onyeka Onwenu, Ray Charles, Whitney Houston, Brenda Fassie. My older cousins, and brothers would play Rap and R&B around me as well. I listened to a lot of WU Tang Klan, KRS1, Biggie, 2Pac, Jay-Z amongst other indigenous rappers, she explained.
“Some of my favorite R&B artists I grew up on included Whitney, Aaliyah, Brandy, Toni Braxton, Mariah. And, don’t let me get you started on my love for Ragga music as well” Listening to different genres of music helped her develop a wide taste and versatility in music.
Zuriel is also no stranger to collaborations within the industry, she’s built up a nice set of credits before this release. While in university, she was featured on a track titled “7 O’Clock” by Conscious/Hardcore rap artist DespA! In 2011, she was featured on EFA’s mixtape “The Waka EP” where she showcased her prowess with spoken word on the track “Gamble With Your Life”. In 2018, Zuriel performed her yet to be released song “PALAVA” at Felabration, in honor of the late music legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
Now that we’ve familiarized ourselves a bit with the background of Zuriel, it’s time to let you know our thoughts on “Believer”. First impressions on the track were that it’s going to be impossible to get through this song without getting up and dancing! Everything about the beat, vocals, and production just make this an all around catchy and dancey single.
The very obvious highlight on the track are Zuriel’s vocals, quite angelic to be honest. They bring the song together in full and really bump it up a notch. Not only is the production quality high, but every note sung was nailed as well. It shows off her vocal range and should only be an introduction as to what she’ll be capable of in years to come. While this was our personal introduction into the music of Zuriel, we’re very excited to see what other projects will be in the works. With that being said, stop reading, and start listening!
