Zach Vannoy masters the garage rock sound on newest single, "Pawn Tune"

Review by Austin Sher

With another fantastic single coming from his solo catalogue, Zach Vannoy has just debuted his latest, “Pawn Tune”. Please do yourselves a favor and read along for our thoughts on the track, in addition to a brief bio on the artist himself.

When Zach Vannoy isn’t writing or playing guitar with Luna Cruise or The Folds, he’s working on his own material, which we have instantly become big fans of. According to Zach, “This project is an ode to the garage rock gods in the likes of Ty Segall and others. Garage rock roots shine through experimental concepts and utilization of different time signatures. The vocals are used as an additional instrument to add ghoulish aesthetic but the lyrics also reflect thoughtful and powerful motifs.”

As massive lovers of everything garage rock, our standards were just a tad bit higher when listening to this single. After the first listen though, we were sold, Zach is the real deal. Emulating the likes of Ty Segall, or even coming close to the gold he releases is an obvious difficult task, but we honestly feel that Ty would be proud listening to “Pawn Tune”. For us, it was the perfect mesh of classic garage with a heavy dose of modern psychedelia.

As if “Pawn Tune” wasn’t good enough, we also managed to check out his recently released second single as well, titled “River Tune”. It’s no surprise, but it rocks equally as hard. The way that Zach has honed his craft and created gold in such a quick amount of time is truly impressive. Not that the genre is being forgotten about per say, but it definitely doesn’t get nearly enough credit for the joy that it brings. We’re happy to see that there’s still artists out there that appreciate the sound and are adding to its small universe.

With this all being said though, even if you’re not familiar with the sound but are looking for something new in your lives, we are highly recommending and suggesting you give him a listen. Our hopes are that Zach has holed himself up during these quarantine times and that there’s an EP or full album on the way. Obviously no rush to the artist as we know these things take time, but his talent oozes through in his work so far, and we’d love more where we can get it. In the meantime, we’ll have both these tunes on repeat.
