Toronto garage rock trio, Weekend Goodbye, deliver big on latest single "Waste Yer Life"

Review by Austin Sher

Released earlier this year in April, Weekend Goodbye are back with their new power punk single, “Waste Yer Life”. Join us as we break down what we thought of the track, as well as a bit of background on the band as well.

Currently based in Toronto, the three piece garage rock trio are blending pop and punk in a masterful and original new way. Our first impressions of the track were just how well it blended our old pop punk loves such as blink-182 and Green Day into a much more updated and relevant new track with catchy lyrics and hooks.

Forming in high school, guitarist and vocalist Dylan DG, bassist and vocalist Sebastian Balenzano, and drummer Miguel Salas have been lifelong friends with an intense dedication to do music their way. Their way being blazing a trail and making a name for themselves in Toronto’s all ages-DIY scene, becoming one of the GTA’s most promising young bands in the process. While other kids their age spent their time either partying or studying, the Weekend Goodbye boys spent countless hours honing their craft, writing songs all day and playing shows every weekend. You can be the judge for yourselves, but we can honestly say that their dedication and focus on the music seriously paid off on “Waste Yer Life”.

They’ve blended elements of garage rock, surf punk, skate punk, emo, goth and pop in their music. Weekend Goodbye has created a unique, high-energy brand of alternative rock that is as catchy and melodic as it is gritty and emotional. What we loved most about the track though was just how in sync everyone was on their respective instruments, truly everyone had a moment on the single to shine bright. The vocals were clean, the drums were the perfect rhythm for the beat, and bass lines were rolling and tight.

While the genre certainly never burned out, it’s always nice to see a bit of a revival when it comes to pop punk. The originals are still at it and creating, but it’s not what it used to be. Weekend Goodbye has thrown their hat into the mix and we honestly can’t wait to see what else they’re capable of. This is a band we’ll be keeping a close eye on in the years to come. One big album could certainly take them to the next level and we really hope they deliver!
