Von Venn over delivers on stellar debut single, "Ghost"
Over delivering on their debut single to the world, Von Venn have given us a taste of what’s to come with the fresh release of “Ghost”. Please keep reading for a closer look into the track, as well as a background on this emerging band.
Taking influence and inspiration from some of our personal favorites such as Radiohead, Khruangbin, Father John Misty, and more, it’s no surprise we fell in love with the sound that Von Venn has served up. On the band’s debut single titled “Ghost”, they’ve put together this eclectic mix of styles that feels rooted in rock, but experiments with a wide variety of instrumentation and soundscapes. With a full length album on the way called Jeanie is Out, we’re thrilled to see how the rest of the record shapes up, but for now we’re urging everyone out there to give this a spin.
Made up of Gary Cox, Terry Doyle, Ciara Henry, and Mark Wogan, the project of Von Venn has been a long time coming, especially considering “Ghost” was written in 2021. On the background of it all, it delves into much deeper themes that cover loss and dealing with those lifelong memories. It’s incredibly relatable and even more poignant when you attempt to connect the dots within the lyricism. At upwards of six minutes in length, we also found ourselves quickly getting lost in the mix, being immersed into the atmosphere that the song has created. Something about the instrumentation, and even the vocal delivery, has this expansive and otherworldly feel to it. We suppose that’s part of the charm of the production, but it was a major highlight for us as we were able to zone out and truly appreciate what was coming our way.
Although it definitely borders the line of indie rock in a sense, the infusion of dream pop and feeling like you’re floating on a cloud was an unexpected surprise, but one worth mentioning. Debut singles are always give or take considering the band might take another direction, but after vibing with this instantly, we wouldn’t want Von Venn to venture too far off from this. Looking forward to the release of Jeanie is Out, we’ll certainly be keeping our eyes and ears peeled for much more to come!
