The New Mutiny share their thrilling new track, titled "Narcissist"

Review by Austin Sher

Released on the Eve of Halloween, The New Mutiny have returned with a thrilling new single, “Narcissist”. Do yourselves a big favor and read along with us for our thoughts on the track, as well as a refresher on the band as well.

You may remember not too long ago when we covered The New Mutiny’s single, “Echo of You”. Well now the band is back with another big track that we haven’t been able to stop listening to. As we’ve reviewed the band’s music over the past few months, we’ve heard an obvious growth in both exploration and sound come from them. It’s been a thrill to get to know the members, but also hear the evolution of how they create.

We caught up with the band who let us in on the background of the track. Says Jason on vocals and guitar, “Narcissist on the surface is a song about a sociopath that has decided to take a woman’s life. The idea being that it’s the first of many. It was inspired by someone extremely close to me who had ended a toxic relationship she was in for 16 years. We all thought he was a great guy and that they were happy. It turns out he was an emotionally abusive, controlling piece of human garbage, and left behind some pretty significant emotional scarring. When she opened up about what had gone on she said, ‘He definitely is a narcissist and I believe very strongly that he may be an undiagnosed sociopath.” If that’s the case and she hadn’t gotten away from him any number of terrible things could’ve happened to her that were worse than what she had already gone through. That’s the exact statement that inspired the song.”

As you can see, songs that emulate real life situations tend to be more powerful than fictitious statements made. Knowing that this hits home for the band, it becomes all the more real and intense while listening. We highly recommend you take that into consideration before going in for your first listen. Connect the dots on the story in addition to the lyricism presented on the song, it really does make the difference.

Speaking on the song instrumentally, this is The New Mutiny at their absolute best. Everyone is vibing in terms of synchronization and the mixing is truly perfect. Listening on a hefty sound system, this song brought the walls down. It’s heavy at the forefront and within sound, but you can’t help but think about the context in which the song was created. For us, it instantly brought us to an imagination of seeing it live and witnessing the band get out their real life emotions on stage.

If you like heavy sounding music with real life stories and themes, then look no further, because this is absolutely the music you need to be listening to. Additionally, if this is your first introduction to the band, we highly recommend and suggest you listen to the other songs in their discography, they do not disappoint in the slightest. Having listened over and over in the past, the songs really hit in the best way possible. So what are you waiting for? Get listening!
