Katy Oberle crafts an uplifting sound on her debut record, "Shine"

Review by Austin Sher

Released back in March, but equally as amazing today, Katy Oberle has shared her summery new album, Shine. Please read along with us for our full review of the record, in addition to a bit of background on the artist as well.

For those that may be unaware, Katy Oberle is a spiritually-centered folk-pop singer, songwriter, guitarist who is creating beauty within her songs.. Inspired by the early works of Joni Mitchell and Jewel, as well as influenced by the traditions of Unitarian Universalism and Buddhism, Katy’s songs are vulnerable, validating, and uplifting, as is her soothing soprano voice and gentle guitar accompaniment.

Her professional path led her to become a couples and family therapist, which in turn influenced her musical journey. Her passion to combine the realms of therapy, spirituality, and music resulted in her 2020 studio album, Shine. What you’re going to hear on the record is 14 songs about love, loss, connection, and the overriding message, “when we are kind, we make the world shine.”

Through our first full listen through, the overwhelming calmness and serenity that instantly washed over us was palpable. Song after song after song just happened to get better and better as Katy dove into some very interesting themes and stories within her deep lyricism. Combined with lovely poppy elements, an acoustic guitar, and her angelic vocals singing over the mix, this is just the type of “calm” we need in today’s day and age.

At 14 total tracks, spanning an hour and seven minutes, we instantly envisioned ourselves listening while on a long drive, closely dissecting all the positives emanating from the music. While it would be close to impossible to pick out a favorite, we did instantly fall in love with the album opener and title track, “Shine”, as well as “Ghost Town”, “The Way of your Heart”, and “The Love I Found”. That’s not to say the other tracks fell flat, but these ones just happened to be the most relatable.

With this all being said, we’re highly recommending and suggesting you take the time out of your days to listen in full. You will not regret your listen in the slightest. It’s virtually guaranteed to crack a smile on your face, something we all need more of in our lives.
