Versa the Band release "genreless" new singles "Chelsea in the Park" and "Skyline (Freestyle)
Review by Austin Sher
Here with a set of new singles, “Chelsea in the Spring” and “Skyline (Freestyle)”, Versa the Band are impressing big time with their unique genre of music. Read along with us for our full thoughts on the tracks, in addition a background on their project as well.
From Long Island, New York, Versa the Band made it a priority to create music that was genreless; a discography for anyone to listen to, not defined in any one box. The band — which isn’t much of a band at all — describes itself as a “Music Collective” of artists who come together to collaborate with founder, Ethan Felizzari.
Their sound is one big blend of Alternative and Hip Hop with traditional Pop, elements of Jazz, Soft Rock & more. Influences include artists like Bon Iver, James Blake, Rosalia, & soul legend Sam Cooke. What we’re loving most about this project so far is that it shows their true individuality by not conforming with any one sound. Versa the Band is currently signed to an indie label founded by Felizzari, CK Records (A CK Productions Company) and is expected to release their first full length project in Late Fall 2020.
Based off our first impressions and run through of these two tracks, we’re sold, this is 100% the type of music we needed at this moment in our lives. Ultimately it’s carefree, but also super focused within its sound. While they claim “genreless”, it is refined to the point where all of those influences previously listed pop their heads in and out. It’s got soul, heart, and even a bit of Bon Iver folksiness embedded into its roots.
While this was our first foray into Versa the Band, let it be known right now that it certainly will not be our last! After our first listen through of this two-pack, we had no choice but to check out the rest of the released discography, and to no surprise, it holds up quite well. In fact, their BLM-inspired single, “Enough” was extremely powerful and is absolutely worth a listen once you’re finished with these two.
Without a doubt, this is a project we’ll be keeping a close eye on in the near future. In terms of sound, atmosphere, high quality production value, and love, it checks all the boxes for us in terms of what we’re looking for in our music. If you’re even a passive fan of Hip Hop, we highly recommend taking the time out of your day and listening through, you will not regret it!
