The House Flies create a complex sound on experimental EP, "Glimmer"

Trying their hand at a new sound that we’re welcoming with open arms, the new project of The House Flies have just unleashed their debut EP, Glimmer. Keep reading as we give our in-depth review on the record, in addition to a background on this band.

While you might be familiar with the grunge metal band Murnau, The House Flies is actually an all new side project featuring some of their members. Coming together to further conceptualize new styles and attempt new genres, they’ve just shared their EP titled Glimmer. It takes influence directly from goth and death rock, but is wonderfully driven by a massive helping of drum and bass. This is truly an outstanding record that we’ve enjoyed, so please give it a spin whenever you get the chance.

Clocking in right at around 17 minutes in runtime, immediately The House Flies come out hot and create a deep and complex atmosphere that runs clearly from start to finish. To be completely honest though, this is 100% a genre and style that doesn’t get sent our way too often, however we quickly vibed with the essence and artistry that’s overflowing in Glimmer. For us, we took to the instrumentals and composition factors that make this record an outlier from similar sounds. Typically we attempt to connect the dots within the vocals, and we’re sure there’s plenty of deep themes being covered, but the lo-fi aspect and delivery had them feeling like more of an effect than a focal point. The production certainly stands out as a real differentiator of this record and it’s why we think that the specific mixing on these instruments and primarily the vocals work so well together. While we don’t know for sure what Glimmer speaks on, it barely mattered as we found ourselves perfectly lost within the deep abyss of their different style.

A major factor of our enjoyment was the cohesiveness that they managed to create too. While there’s absolutely individual moments on some of these tracks that stand out, it’s really the entire aura of the record that sticks in your head as you initially click the play button. There’s a darkness, suspense, and unassuming edge that flows through, sort of sucking you into the music patiently waiting on the next standout moment to arrive. We loved the experimentation of this and cannot wait for everyone to listen!
