The Hashi craft an outstanding new sound on debut EP, "Family Jewels"

Review by Austin Sher

Released in February of 2020, but still hitting as hard now, The Hashi released their debut EP Family Jewels to the world. We are absolutely in love with it! Do yourselves a favor and read along with us as we share our thoughts on the record.

Currently based out of Santa Ana, California, The Hashi have been making music together since around 2016 when original members Matt Jay and Matt P began to regularly jam with one another. After getting Matt’s brother Ben to tag along and play bass, The Hashi became a trio of rockers.

On just the three short songs on Family Jewels, this band has managed to quickly make us fans, wanting more and more of whatever they’re able to get out there. While being fans of a heavier rock sound, The Hashi toe the line between punk and alternative, but are rather bridging the gap between fans of both sides.

Implementing a mix of grungy guitars, heavy yet assertive vocals, and a bass forward sound, we were truly impressed on just our first listen of the EP. To be honest, our initial hope after finishing up the listen was “when is more coming?” Now while we’d never want to rush artists into creating for our selfish pleasures, we will make it clear that we hope there’s a bigger and wider release looming in 2020.

As far as picking a favorite track, well, that would be way too difficult to do considering there’s so few. With that being said though, the opener “Who Will You Call” is a fantastic introduction of what you can expect from the two following singles. Additionally, creating a cohesive sound on any type of record regardless of length is insanely important to us when judging music. Specifically we’d never want to listen to an album in full and it sounds like 12 different bands made one singular record. That’s where The Hashi has succeeded, they’ve created a unique and signature sound on just three songs that would make you be able to pick them out in a sea of music.

Wrapping things up though, we’re thrilled that Family Jewels crossed our path before the year ends. There’s so been so many amazing releases from so many bands this year who have decided to put out a debut in 2020, so we’re happy to see that this is just another winner that is standing out from the rest. So what are you waiting for? It’s time to get listening!
