The Breakdown explode in sound on debut album, "Open The Barricades"

Just released on August 19th, 2022, The Breakdown have officially shared their debut record, Open The Barricades. We’re loving it! Keep reading for a closer look into the record, as well as a background on the band.

Slowly leading up to the big day with a series of singles that only continued to rise the hype, The Breakdown have now over delivered with Open The Barricades. Jam-packed with inventive instrumentation, personal expressions through the lyricism, and a whole lot of attitude, we’ve quickly fallen in love with their eclectic sound that envelopes so many different styles. If this happens to be your introduction to the band, do yourselves all a favor and check this one out as soon as you can.

Coming in at 11 songs, spanning right around the 40 minute mark, our initial reaction was how diverse the entirety of the record ended up being. The Breakdown kick things off with an explosive track called “King of the Hill” to really hit you with a sonic punch, but as the record goes on, they begin to show a slightly softer side of themselves and slow it down a bit. Particularly we enjoyed the string sections that flourished on “Wishing Well”. One thing that we positively pulled from Open The Barricades is that while the band certainly has a signature feel and essence to their sound, the front to back listen truly gives the listener that album experience that unfortunately feels like a lost art these days. Undoubtedly, it’s one of those albums that deserves an uninterrupted and complete play through.

As for the actual messaging through the music, the band claims that they’re “exploring themes of nostalgia”, which nicely comes through when you listen. A recommendation would be that on repeated listens, to attempt to make connections through their words because they’ve got a ton of profound feeling being communicated. All in all though, it really is such a fantastic blend of that classic Brit-pop sound mixed with a ton of modern elements that simply check all of our boxes. It’s a must listen in our opinion and we urge everyone to hit the play button.
