Manchester's Silver Sound Explosion deliver their killer new album, Pop Dithyramb

Review by Austin Sher

Coming out of Manchester, England, Silver Sound Explosion have put forth their rocking new full length album, Pop Dithyramb. Read along with us as we give an in-depth review into what we thought of the record as well as a bit of background on the band.

Let us be the first to say that we truly enjoyed what we heard on this record. As we were unfamiliar with the band before, this was a fantastic introduction into their world. Before we get into the music though, we’d love to provide you with some information to get acquainted with the group. Consisting of Ben on vocals, Chris on bass, and Louise on drums, the trio make up England’s Silver Sound Explosion. The first thing you’ll notice is that their cited musical influences are extremely reminiscent of the sound they put off. Musical influences such as Modern Lovers, Velvets, Bob Dylan, Beach Boys, Ramones, Stones, The Beatles, Brian Jonestown Massacre, indie music, 60’s USA garage, and psych. It’s as if they take a slice of each group and sound and crafted the ultimate ode to those legends.

According to the band, the album was primarily recorded in their back room while it was also engineered and mastered by Ben himself. We have to say this is quite an impressive feat in addition to playing on the record. While a majority of the album was taken care of by the band, “Sidekick” and “Telephone Wired” were recorded for a single at Whitby Studios near Liverpool and produced by lo-fi garage punk producer Fran Ashcroft. What I truly respect about SIlver Sound Explosion the most is that the album download is free because they don’t think much about making money. They’re truly just passionate about what they do. Their music is a gift, but donations can be made if preferred when downloading through Bandcamp.

Now that you’ve gotten your background, it’s time to dig into the tunes! Coming in at 10 total tracks, Pop Dithyramb was overall a lovely and cohesive listen from start to finish. Our immediate thoughts were this is classic Brit Pop that us Americans love so much. It very obviously has Beatles vibes, but with their own twist on things. The instrumentation throughout the record was quite original and varied, it never got boring in the slightest. Each track was easily identifiable from the last and piqued our interest with listen after listen.

The standout tracks for us were “Telephone Wired”, “Love Potion”, and the album closer “Space Kid”. That’s not to say the rest of the tracks weren’t awesome, because they were, but we’d recommend you check out the album in full! This is a career we’ll be watching with a close eye, as we truly can’t wait to see what else they release in the coming months.
