Seven Layer Piano Cakes & VRL collaborate on suspenseful single, "Endgame"
Collaborating on an absolute piece of beauty, both Seven Layer Piano Cakes and VRL hae brought the best of themselves into “Endgame”. Read on for our in-depth review of the track, as well as a background on the artists.
Being described as “dreamy and intense dark pop”, we couldn’t help but overwhelmingly agree about a minute into our listen of Endgame. With the addition of VRL on the vocals, the composition from Seven Layer Piano Cakes has lent itself incredibly well to the overall mix. Highly influenced by artists such as Beach House, M83, and Depeche Mode, you’ll certainly hear that within the instrumentation, but they both continue to put all of their originality into this to make it pop and stand out.
On the background of it all, “Endgame” is about the end and the aftermath of long term relationships. While the subject matter is ultimately relatable in such a circumstance, the immense amount of passion and emotion on this duet brings it to even higher levels somehow. You should know that there are actually two versions of this track, one with vocals and an instrumental, but both hit just as hard with or without the context.
Speaking directly on the instrumentation, we’ve got to give the sincere recommendation to listen to this on a nice pair of headphones or soundsystem. The production is unreal and the fuzz, spaciness, and suspense of it all are what make this song amazing. Of course we were instantly reminded by Beach House the way “Endgame” starts out, but as it trots along and builds drama, it becomes something of its own. We’ll be honest, we weren’t previously familiar with Seven Layer Piano Cakes’ music prior to this, but this piqued our interest to a point that we can’t wait to dig into everything else he’s made so far.
With all that being said, each version of this song is worth your time and energy for a play because of their juxtaposition to one another.
